In June of 1979, I went to the New York State track championships at Cornell University to compete in the Triple Jump. The Section 6 winners went by bus on Friday, stayed overnight, then competed on Saturday.

I roomed with the 6'4" Mike Murphy from Williamsville, who won the states with a triple jump of 47'11". It was a rainy weekend in Ithaca, and my coaches Bob Connell and Rick Wilson drove with Ben Reynolds to watch me compete.

I broke my school record (43'10") on the first jump at 43 feet 11 and 1/2 inches, topping my old 43'10". I did one-half inch better on the second jump, but could only do 43'10" on the final attempt. It was a wild and weird experience.
